How To Celebrate Pride 2021
Be who you are, wherever you are, with no apologies. No matter your sexual orientation or gender identity, just know that here at Dime Bags, we’ll never judge you. This is a safe space for everyone!
Pride month is celebrated in June as a tribute to those who were involved in the Stonewall riots of 1969. Initiated by police who raided the gay club, Stonewall Inn, in New York City, these riots served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the US and around the world. People within the LGBTQ+ community have struggled for decades to overcome prejudice and be accepted for who they are. Although we have come a long way, there is still so much work to be done.
What Dime Bags is Doing to Support LGBTQ+
When Dime Bags started out, one of the first stores that carried our products was a gay-owned store in San Francisco. They were only believers in our bags, but they knew that our mission was to cover all social justice issues and be a brand that is inclusive for all kinds of people. The first thing we did as a company to show our support was come out with our Pride patch. Since then, we have developed an ever-growing Patches With A Purpose program that we have already donated $4,923.02 for the first quarter of 2021. We have been looking for the right non-profit to partner with for another patch dedicated to Pride.
We understand that Pride Month is often taken advantage of by brands for marketing purposes, exploiting the symbolism of Pride for their own capital gain. That’s just not what we stand for. While we know we are not perfect, we are always looking for ways to better ourselves and give back to our community as well as minority groups. Since we started this brand in 2008, we have been challenging the authority and abuse of power within society and have stood firmly by our motto “Don’t Judge Me”.
As of right now, we are working on developing partnerships with several LGBTQ+ organizations and expanding our Patches with a Purpose program to be more inclusive of marginalized groups. While we search for organizations that would be a great fit for the program, we felt it was imperative to contribute something in honor of Pride. From the 14th to the 21st of June, we are donating all of the sales for our current Pride patch to an organization that YOU voted for on social media: The Okra Project. The Okra Project addresses the food insecurity faced by Black Trans people by providing them with nutritious and home cooked meals as well as vital resources.
It is important to us to show our support ALL year-round, not just in June. We cannot wait to grow our Patches With A Purpose program more and consistently donate to the charities who support marginalized communities.
Additionally, we aren’t afraid to take a stand on social media and support the LGBTQ+ community, even if we lose followers and customers, which sadly still happens in today’s age. We aim to be inclusive on both social media and in our print marketing efforts, showing people of all walks, and love in many forms. Many of our Brand Ambassadors are proudly fluid or trans, we believe partnering with them, and directing people to their social profiles can help spread awareness and knowledge. We can say we stand for equality all day long but if we don’t put our words into actions, what does it actually mean? We support everyone’s path to being their most authentic self, whatever that may look like. We want our community to know that we support them wholeheartedly, no matter their sexual preference, fluidity, or gender.
How To Show Your Support This Pride Month
Pride is a time to celebrate and uplift the LGBTQ+ community, and ultimately, promote equality and love amongst everyone. Whether you’re part of the LGBTQ+ community or not, you can participate in a variety of things to show your support and help bolster self-expression for all.
As an ally, you should first educate yourself on the history and importance of Pride as well as the hardships many LGBTQ+ people have faced throughout the years. We can all do our part to help destigmatize the topic and make the world a safer place for all kinds of love. It is extremely important to uplift LGBTQ+ voices, culture, and rights. Here are a few ways you can celebrate and contribute this June:
- March in a Pride Parade
Grab your favorite Dime Bag and go to your local Pride Parade! 🌈Not only is this a fun way to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, but these events serve as peaceful demonstrations to support gay rights and by participating, you’re showing that you are an ally. Since more Americans are getting vaccinated, Pride events are happening in 2021! You can find Pride Parades happening all across the world throughout the months of June and July, so make sure you find one near you to attend this year!
2. Shop at LGBTQ+ owned businesses
From restaurants, to clothing stores, and everything in between, try supporting businesses owned by LGBTQ+ people. In fact, one of the first head shops that sold Dime Bags, was a owned by a gay man who remains a close friend of Dime Bags owner today. A quick google search will bring up a lot of great information on what brands you can support. Your city might also have information on local LGBTQ+ owned businesses that you can shop at. It’s also important to understand that some businesses choose to support anti-lgbtq+ actions, and if you’re an ally, you should try to avoid giving your money to these companies, but bring awareness to their actions.
LGBTQ+ people in every community face enormous obstacles simply because of who they are and who they love. Pride Month is a great time for us to give to organizations who are doing great things to support the wellbeing of the LGBTQ+ community. Whether that's providing a mental health hotline, preventing bullying, or fighting injustices, every little bit helps! We found a few organizations that are doing great things and you should check them out too: The Trevor Project, GLSEN, and The Human Rights Campaign. Of course, there are many more options out there, and Charity Navigator can be a great resource for you.
Lastly, we know that representation today is more important than ever. Dime Bags has always believed that people shouldn't be judged- when it comes to practicing religion, being proud of your race, or who you love. Dime Bags is also proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. Our staff is a mix of races, ethnicities and sexualities- we believe this not only makes us more cognizant as a brand but also as individuals.
We’re curious, as a business, how can we do better? What ways would you like to see us showing up more? We ‘d love to hear from you! We’re always trying to grow as a company and as individuals. We welcome any feedback, positive or not, on how we can show up more or better. We wish everyone a happy Pride Month!
