Cannabis has been shown in numerous studies on humans and animals to reduce stress-related anxiety. The compounds in cannabis work to relieve anxiety by targeting a vital homeostasis system in humans and animals called, the endocannabinoid system. One-way cannabis compounds, such as CBD, activate the endocannabinoid system is by targeting the neuro-receptor known as 5-HT1A, which is essentially a signaling hub for emotional stability. The same receptor is the target for most modern anti-depressant and anti-anxiety pharmaceuticals. This activity triggers a biochemical response that helps calm the cardiovascular and nervous system’s response to stress. A less sensitive stress-response means less anxiety from stress and better overall mood and health regulation.

THC from cannabis is a little different. In small dosages, marijuana has been shown to reduce stress-related anxiety. However, long-term use and high, acute dosages of THC-rich cannabis can increase the stress-response in some people. This is why some experience a racing heart and mind or have paranoia from potent marijuana. Interestingly though, CBD may actually block THC’s effects and can potentially counteract its psychoactive properties.

Basically, cannabis compounds can potentially prevent the spread of certain types of cancers. Experts are still studying this effect to fully understand the mechanisms by which it occurs.
